About 25 million Iranian citizens took part in the elections to the country’s parliament and the Council of Experts that took place on Friday. Turnout was only 41%, IRNA reported on Saturday, March 2.
It is known that voting in Iran lasted 14 hours, with the Ministry of Internal Affairs twice extending the time until the voting was completed.
In total, there are approximately 60 thousand polling stations in the country. In total, 61 million Iranians could exercise the right to vote, of which 3.5 million could vote for the first time. Counting of votes continues.
A record number of candidates were allowed to participate in the parliamentary elections – more than 15.2 thousand people, which accounted for almost 75% of the total number of the first registered applicants. About 1.7 thousand candidates admitted to the election are women.
The first meeting of the new parliament will take place at the end of May.
Also on March 1, elections were held for the Council of Experts, the advisory body that determines Iran’s Supreme Leader. 144 candidates competed for 88 seats in the Rada. The Council of Expediency selected them from 510 applicants who registered to participate in the elections.
Many candidates advocating reforms in Iran were barred from participating in parliamentary elections. And some political figures, including former Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, were not allowed to participate in elections to the Council of Experts.
The Council of Experts is elected for eight years by direct secret ballot voting by Iranians and has the power to appoint the country’s supreme leader.
Earlier in Tehran, a rally organized by the families of the dead passengers of the Ukrainian plane, which was shot down by the Iranian military with missiles in 2020, was dispersed.
