The Lithuanian authorities explained the decision as a solution to the problems of national security, smuggling and violations of international sanctions.
The Lithuanian government banned the boarding and alighting of passengers from Russian trains bound for Kaliningrad at the Kyana and Kibartai border checkpoints. Interfax wrote this on Wednesday, February 21.
The ban will take effect on March 1.
In Lithuania, Russian trains stop at two stations – Kyana and Kybartai. According to the transport rules of Russian Railways, Russians could not go to them even before the ban, even if they had a Schengen visa.
It was noted that the resolution also refers to “exceptional cases.” They will be determined by the State Border Guard Service of Lithuania (VSAT). Whether the ban will affect Russians with EU passports, visas and GNP is not specified.
Kyana is a village 27 km east of Vilnius and 9 km from the border from Belarus. Kybartai is a city 16 km west of the city of Vilkaviskis, on the border of the Kaliningrad region of Russia.
In addition, the Lithuanian authorities have promised to reduce the issuance of permits to Belarusian and Lithuanian carriers operating regular international passenger bus services.
Earlier it was reported that the Baltic countries are planning to create common defense zones on the border of the Russian Federation.
