Russia is trying to develop nuclear space weapons that, thanks to the energy wave when detonated, are capable of disabling a large number of commercial and government satellites. CNN reports this with reference to contacts in the US security sector.

It is noted that the weapon developed by the Russian Federation is known to military space experts as nuclear EMI (electromagnetic interference). It creates a pulse of electromagnetic energy and a stream of highly charged particles, which, even in space conditions, can disable satellites orbiting the Earth.

The US has reportedly been monitoring Russia’s efforts to develop anti-satellite weapons, including EMPs, for years. But recently, American intelligence has learned that Russia has made progress in developing a nuclear electromagnetic pulse.

One of the channel’s interlocutors explained that the concept of this weapon originated at the end of the Cold War. The risk for the United States, he said, is that a collection of disabled satellites will build up in space, which “will be dangerous for any new satellites that may attempt to launch to replace or repair existing satellites.

The weapon could destroy entire constellations of small satellites, such as SpaceX’s Starlink, which Ukraine uses in its war with Russia. US intelligence estimates that the theoretical use of such weapons for the Russian Federation would be a last resort, as it would also affect its satellites.

We remind you that the US presidential administration has confirmed the information that Russia is developing anti-satellite weapons. White House national security communications adviser John Kirby said the weapons did not pose an immediate threat.

Analysts say the space-based weapon that Russia may be developing is more likely to be a nuclear device to blind, jam or burn out the electronics inside satellites, rather than an explosive nuclear warhead to destroy them. .
