To contain oil spills, containment booms are installed, and contaminated surface water is treated with sorbents.
Petroleum products that entered the ecosystem as a result of drone strikes carried out by Russian occupation forces on an oil depot in Kharkov’s Nemyshlyansky district did not reach drinking water sources. This was stated by the head of OBA Oleg Sinegubov.
“The most important thing is that the fuel did not get into drinking water sources, so there is no threat to consumers. The water in the taps of Kharkov residents is safe and of sufficient quality. We did not allow the oil spill to flow into Seversky Donets River. As planned, the day before we installed special equipment in two places on the Uda and Nemyshl rivers. This makes it possible to contain a layer of oil film, “he said.
According to Sinegubov, a special sorbent is already used in some areas.
“We keep this issue under control. At the meeting of the regional commission on fuel and safety and emergency situations, we will hear reports on the work of the relevant structures,” added the head of the OVA.
According to preliminary data, about three thousand tons of petroleum products entered the ecosystem.
As stated in the Office of the Prosecutor General, experts are working to determine the extent of the contamination. Due to a Russian drone strike on the territory of an oil depot on February 9, equipment and tanks for storing petroleum products were damaged. Approximately, at that moment there were approximately 3.8 thousand tons of gasoline and diesel fuel in the tanks. Due to the long-term leakage of petroleum products, they entered the Nemyshl River, which flows through the territory of Kharkov and subsequently flows into the Kharkov, Lopan and Udy rivers.
In order to establish the scale of environmental consequences, an inspection of the area contaminated as a result of oil spills and burning was carried out, and soil samples were taken for laboratory research. A survey of Nemyshlya, Kharkov, Lopan and Udy rivers is conducted to take water samples. To contain oil spills, containment booms are installed, and contaminated water surfaces are treated with sorbents that absorb and neutralize the effects of oil products.
As reported, the environmental damage from the Russian strike on an oil depot in Kharkov exceeded UAH 30 million.
