Kenyan marathon runner and world record holder Kelvin Kiptum has died in a car accident. The car the athlete was driving crashed on February 11 near the city of Eldoret in Kenya. According to local police, Kiptum lost control, drove off the road and crashed into a tree.

Along with Kiptum, his coach Gervais Hakizimana died. Another person in the car survived and was hospitalized with serious injuries, CNN reports. The BBC Russian Service writes about a woman who survived a car accident.
Kiptum, who was 24 years old, managed to set several world records in the marathon. He, in particular, ran the Chicago Marathon in 2 hours 35 seconds in October 2023 and intended to improve his result in the near future, becoming the first marathon runner to complete the distance in less than two hours. In April, he planned to run out of two hours in Rotterdam.
