Brussels proposes to extend preferential trade terms for Ukraine, in particular, the suspension of import duties and quotas for another year. According to European officials, this will provide support for the Ukrainian economy during the war. At the same time, the European Commission turned on the so-called safety net for farmers from EU countries in order to suppress protests in France and other EU member states. This was reported by The Guardian.
The commission’s statement notes that an emergency braking mechanism is proposed for poultry meat, eggs and sugar from Ukraine. It is indicated at the level of average volumes in 2022-2023. If import volumes are exceeded, import tariffs will apply.
The article also said that on January 31, French and Belgian farmers set up dozens of blockades on highways and access roads to a large container port to force governments to relax environmental rules and help shield them from rising prices and cheap imports.
Let us recall that in early January, Polish Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Czeslaw Sekierski said that Warsaw will not lift the ban on the import of Ukrainian grain and will comply with the embargo introduced in May 2023.
