Russia considers the large-scale NATO military exercise Steadfast Defender 2024, which began in Europe, a threat. Kremlin Speaker Dmitry Peskov said this at a briefing on Wednesday, January 31.
According to him, Russia “clearly sees” NATO training as a threat, because “NATO is an instrument of confrontation,” and the Alliance itself is thus “led, formed, organized and now led by the United States .”
“This is a threat to us, how we treat it. And the appropriate measures for it continue to be taken – especially against the backdrop of how the Alliance continues to move its military infrastructure towards our borders in for several decades,” Peskov said.
Recall that the Steadfast Defender 2024 exercise is the largest since the end of the Cold War. About 90 thousand military personnel of the North Atlantic Alliance and Sweden, which may join NATO, are participating in them. The maneuvers will last until May. During the exercise, the transport of troops to combat readiness, training and operational units will be carried out. It is planned to conduct at least 500 air combat operations.
