After the accident, the child’s entire foot was left with no skin. Foreign doctors assured him that he could not walk and the only way out was to amputate the leg, but the boy was given new skin and strengthened with stem cells.
In Lvov, doctors saved a child’s leg from amputation by growing skin on the leg and strengthening it with stem cells. The press service of the First Medical Association of Lvov reported this today, January 31.
It is reported that for a whole year, traumatologists at St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital fought to save the child’s leg.
“After the accident, the boy’s entire leg was left without skin. Foreign doctors assured him that he would not be able to walk, and the only way out was to amputate the leg. But specialists in Lviv grew new skin for in the child and the stem cell strengthened it,” the report said.
The boy’s name is Nikolai, he is 13 years old, lives in Lviv. A year ago, a bus ran over his leg and the skin came off his foot.
“The orthopedists and traumatologists at the children’s hospital began to restore the cover of the injured area. And the process of formation lasted three months. After that, the child got up and began to walk. And after another two months , he began to run. But the newly formed skin was very sensitive. As soon as Nikolai began to move, pressure areas formed on the feet, which led to diaper rash and new wounds. Therefore, orthopedists and traumatologists decided that use regenerative medicine – to implant stem cells in the injured part of the leg,” reports the First Medical Association of Lvov.
Doctors explain that this treatment is designed to improve the overall condition of the skin, make it more elastic and strengthen its barrier function. Together with their Italian colleague Roberto Brambillo, Lviv doctors transplanted the child’s cells from his own adipose tissue.
“We took adipose tissue from the child’s stomach. Through a special filter, mesenchymal stem cells were extracted from it and injected into the soft tissue areas where we wanted to improve the local situation,” said by Galina Gachkevich, head of the department of orthopedics and traumatology.
It was noted that the operation lasted only an hour, and the next day Nikolai was sent home. Doctors assure that the condition of the skin on his foot will improve significantly within three months, and then the teenager can lead an active life as much as possible.

We remind you that Lviv doctors performed stem cell transplantation for the first time in the summer of 2022. Thus, doctors saved the life of a resident of Ternopil who had heart failure.
