A court in The Hague found that Russia violated parts of the UN Convention for the Prevention of the Financing of Terrorism by failing to investigate financial support for separatists in eastern Ukraine in 2014. However, Themis did not award compensation, as Ukraine demanded. Radio Liberty reported this.
Moscow was also found guilty of discrimination against the Ukrainian population because the occupiers did not ensure the presence of the Ukrainian language in educational institutions in Crimea.
It is noted that the court also refused to make a specific decision on the likely responsibility of the aggressor country for the sale of Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 from territories not controlled by Ukraine on July 17, 2014, which Kyiv requested.
As you know, on January 16, 2017, Ukraine filed a lawsuit in the Russian Federation with the International Court of Justice in The Hague in connection with the violation by the aggressor country of the International Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism and the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. Ukraine is seeking a court to order Russia to pay reparations for attacks and crimes in the east of the country, including the loss of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17.
The Ukrainian side stated that in 2014, the Russian authorities and its officials deliberately financed terrorist attacks in Crimea, Donetsk and Lugansk. It was noted that Moscow supplied weapons and money to the so-called LDPR for the murder of Ukrainians, terror, bombing of the civilian population, destruction of schools and hospitals.
Part of the terror and genocidal practices was forced Russification, passportization, and erasure of Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar identities in Crimea and the occupied Donbass.
Ukraine received the first results of these important hearings in November 2019. Then the International Court of Justice rejected all objections from Russia and its lawyers to the jurisdiction of the court to consider the case of Ukraine’s claim on the application of the International Conventions for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism and the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. The aggressor country was then obliged to resume education in Crimean Tatar schools in Crimea, the activities of the Mejlis, and this was an important victory for Kyiv. Russia ignored the first court decision.
Let us recall that on November 2, 2023, the International Court of Arbitration in The Hague fully satisfied the claim of the Ukrainian company DTEK and awarded the aggressor country Russia to pay compensation for assets seized during the occupation of Crimea.
