A Midsummer Night’s DreameShakespeare’s comedy at the Theater de la Ville

A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Jean-Louis Fernandez

Everything here is fantastic and arabesque, to use the words of Victor Hugo. The story, which takes place in Athens, unites and separates two pairs of young lovers. Hermia wants to marry Lysander, but her father, Aegeus, arranges for her to marry Demetrius, with whom Helena is in love. Actions take place in a magical forest, during the night, which looks like a dream. Emmanuelle Demarcy-Motta’s direction calls upon all the arts of theater, from the traps from which the fairies emerge to the flight of their queen, Titania, who crosses the main stage in Sarah Bernhardt’s chamber. Francois Reno’s new translation cleans up this masterpiece written between 1594 and 1595. Pure theater moment.

Hors Pistes Festival at Pompidou Center

An excerpt from Rebecca Chaillon’s “Where the Goat Ties, It Must Do.”
Juanita Boada Salazar

The 19th edition of the Hors Pistes festival, dedicated to moving images that intersect the news, explores the rules of sport this year, drawing inspiration from the Women’s World Cup, the Rugby World Cup and the run-up to the Olympic Games in Paris. In the program: a collective exhibition that, in addition to sporting performances, questions today’s protests through the works of Pauline Bastard, Laurent Salvador, Maria Vedder, among others. Not forgetting the demo Somerspiel, Esther Salamon’s film (February 3) and parades, Nicolas Faubert’s presentation (February 4)… Or how sports are adapting to our times.
