Hundreds of services and sites crashed on RuNet. Users complained about problems accessing the websites of major banks, marketplaces and other frequently used services.
In Russia on the night of Tuesday, January 30, there was a large-scale Internet outage. The Telegram channel Code Durov, which specializes in Internet technologies, reports “massive destruction” in the RU domain zone.
“Hundreds of services and sites are currently crashing on Runet. Currently, users are complaining about problems accessing the sites of large banks, marketplaces and other services that are frequently used by Russians,” the message said.
Russians on social networks are complaining en masse that popular sites in the RU domain zone (in particular Yandek, VKontakte and the portal website of government services) do not open. Applications of various services are also unavailable (for example, Tinkoff, Avito, Wildberries, etc.) It is impossible to get access to Russian sites, especially, from abroad, users say.
As explained by the Durov Code, there was a failure of DNSSEC – a set of extensions to the DNS protocol designed to guarantee the reliability and integrity of data on the network. Thanks to this, in the RU domain zone, it is guaranteed that there is no possibility of changing the IP address as a result of attacks.
The Network Freedoms Project notes that Russian authorities previously promised to move all users in the country to a Russian DNS server. “This is probably what is happening now on many sites in the .ru zone,” reports the Telegram channel of the project.
The coordination center for the .ru and .рф domains confirmed a failure in the DNSSEC infrastructure. The director of the Center, in a commentary to RosSMI, said that their specialists “are working to eliminate the problem.”
The Ministry of Digital Development of the Russian Federation has promised that access to sites with the .ru domain will be restored “in the near future.”
We remind you that on Tuesday the Main Intelligence Directorate “brought down” the special communication server of the Russian Ministry of Defense. As a result of the cyber attack, the exchange of information between the units of the Russian Ministry of Defense stopped.
