The NATO Secretary General visited Washington to discuss with Congressional leadership the importance of the Ukraine aid bill.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Tuesday, January 30, discussed support for Ukraine with the Republican and Democratic leaders of the US Congress, the NATO press service reported.
Stoltenberg spoke with Speaker of the US House of Representatives Mike Johnson and other members of the Congressional leadership in Washington.
“He explained why it was difficult and that they had a difficult situation on the border with Mexico. I said that NATO, of course, will not have a say in an important domestic political issue in the United States, but it is important for NATO. To have a voice in Congress, a resolution was adopted to ensure continued support for Ukraine,” said the NATO Secretary.
He emphasized that a strong NATO is a strategic interest of the United States and through NATO the United States has more friends and allies than any other country.
In addition, he pointed to the importance of supporting NATO’s strength by increasing defense investment, acknowledging the increase in contributions among all Alliance members in recent years.
“Stoltenberg noted the support of the US and emphasized that this support remains essential for the safety of Ukraine and the stability of Europe,” the statement said.
The Alliance Secretary General also met with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and took part in a discussion on Ukraine with several representatives of the Republican Party. He completed a meeting with the co-chairs of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly and the leadership of the House Foreign Affairs Committee of the US House of Representatives.
Also today, Stoltenberg and Austin discussed increasing the production of weapons for Ukraine.
Let’s remember that US President Joe Biden asked Congress in October last year to approve additional funds, including more than $60 billion for Ukraine. However, Republicans are still blocking it because of the contradictions between the parties on the issue of border security with Mexico.
