The United Nations made an unexpected decision regarding one of the banks of the aggressor state.
The United Nations opened an account in a non-sanctioned Russian bank and began accepting payments in rubles. Reuters reported this on Monday, January 22, in relation to Sovcombank.
Sovcombank, which recently applied to OFAC to obtain a license to pay in dollars to the UN under the Environment Financial Initiative (UNEP FI), reported that the UN opened an account in one of the non approved banks in Russia and can accept payments in rubles.
The name of the bank was not disclosed.
The UN press service did not comment on this information.
Sovcombank is seeking a license from the American regulator to resume payments and repay debt on membership fees accrued since the start of 2022.
Let’s remember that on December 18, 2023, the European Union announced the 12th package of sanctions against Russia. These include restrictions against Russian rough and polished diamonds, measures against Russia’s military-industrial complex, increased control over compliance with oil price ceilings, as well as personal sanctions against to a group of prominent Russians.
