On the evening of January 22, the text of the bill on multiple citizenship, which is called “On some issues in the field of migration regarding the grounds and procedure for acquiring and terminating citizenship of Ukraine,” was published on the Rada website.
The text of the explanatory note states that the innovation offers:
- determine the states whose citizens (subjects) acquire Ukrainian citizenship through a simplified procedure;
- determine the category of people who must cease foreign citizenship in order to acquire Ukrainian citizenship;
- enter a declaration recognizing oneself as a citizen of Ukraine;
- update the category of people who cannot acquire Ukrainian citizenship;
- review the grounds for loss of Ukrainian citizenship.
According to the president, the right to Ukrainian citizenship will be given to “everyone who, during periods of various waves of emigration, was forced to leave their native land, ending up in Europe, the USA, Canada, Asian countries, and Latin America.” We are also talking about non-ethnic Ukrainians helping in the war against Russia.
Everyone who helps us, despite hundreds and thousands of kilometers from their native land. Foreign volunteers who stood up to defend Ukraine. Everyone who fights for the freedom of Ukraine as for their homeland. And Ukraine will become like that for them. For everyone who can feel that being in Ukraine means being at home, not tourists, but citizens,” Zelensky noted.
