The Telegraph reports this and publishes maps of the location of these fortifications.
More than 600 miles (965 km) of new concrete trenches and underground command posts are planned, according to the newspaper.
The main efforts are now going on around Liman and near Avdeevka, as well as near Kupyansk. The publication clarifies that the main defense line is being built approximately 16 km west of Avdeevka.
Here, Ukraine uses a number of natural barriers from lakes and rivers, the article says.
Another line is in the city of Pokrovsk, “which Russia needs to capture in order to fulfill its goal of capturing the entire Donetsk region.” Pokrovsk is protected by a two-level trench system running throughout the city.
The most powerful of the new defense lines may be around Chernigov, the publication writes. At the same time, as specified, there are no expectations that this area will become a new front.
According to the newspaper, the Ukrainian defense is reminiscent of the “Surovikin Line” where the Russians stopped the Ukrainian counter-offensive this summer.
First there are minefields, then a network of trenches and fortified command centers. In some areas where the front is static, the Ukrainian Armed Forces placed fortifications about a kilometer from each other.
However, the publication notes, the new fortifications, although they will allow Ukraine to save more lives, they will “reduce Kyiv’s ambitions to regain the occupied territory.”
Ukraine’s goal for 2024 appears to be to replenish its battle-damaged forces and restore offensive combat power ahead of next year, the article says.
