Residents of Kyiv, Zhitomir and Cherkasy regions were involved in the intimidation of Yuri Nikolov.
Police identified five participants in illegal actions against a journalist in Kyiv. This was reported by the National Police Department of the capital on Sunday, January 21.
Law enforcement officials did not name the journalist, but the circumstances of the case refer to an incident with investigative journalist Yuri Nikolov.
“On January 14, the attackers came to Kyiv, went to the house where the victim lived, covered the doors with postcards and demanded that the man come out of them. The attackers recorded their actions on their own mobiles phone,” the report said.
It is indicated that residents of Kyiv, Zhytomyr and Cherkasy regions are involved. On January 20, law enforcement officers conducted a search of the defendants’ residences. Material evidence was seized, in particular computer equipment and mobile phones, which were used to record the commission of the offense and the planning of illegal actions.
“As part of the pre-trial investigation, law enforcement officers are undertaking a range of investigative and operational measures to conduct a comprehensive and impartial investigation,” police added.
Earlier, investigative journalist Yuri Nikolov reported the threat: unknown people tried to get into his apartment in the Darnitsky district. They terrorized his mother and neighbors, and left stickers on doors with the words “evader” and “traitor.” Based on the facts, the prosecutor’s office began criminal proceedings.
Also this week, the SBU opened criminal proceedings over the illegal wiretapping and video recording of members of the Bihus.Info journalism project.
President Vladimir Zelensky responded to these scandals. The head of state said that any pressure on journalists is unacceptable.
