Trump said Republicans should say “no” to any agreement that does not contain “what it takes” to stop the flow of migrants. It is noted that Trump’s statement clearly puts pressure on new Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Los Angeles) to stick to this line.
Johnson is under pressure from the Senate Republican Party and the White House to agree to the deal being prepared in the Senate. Members of Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell’s team immediately opposed what appeared to be Trump’s attempt to derail the Senate deal.
“It’s not going to help,” said Senate Republican Leader John Thune, the second-ranking GOP leader in the Senate.
Thune argues that the Senate package on Ukraine is Republicans’ best chance to stem the flow of migrants, which topped 300,000 in December alone, the highest monthly figure ever.
There are a number of points there that are good, conservative border policies that we have been trying to implement for years,” he emphasized.
Trump criticized the upcoming Senate border agreement in a post published on the website Truth Social.
I don’t think we should have a border agreement at all unless we get EVERYTHING we need to stop the INVASION of millions upon millions of people, many from unknown parts of the world, into our once great country, which will soon be great again ! – he wrote on his social network.
