On January 16, the Narodnaya Pravda resource published a video of part of the team of the Bihus.Info investigative project, in which they probably used marijuana, MDMA and amphetamine at a corporate party. The video also contains recordings of conversations and phone calls of these employees.
The description of the video states that this happened at the team’s corporate party in a house near Kiev.
The founder of the project, Denis Bigus, said that the cameramen and journalists in the video did not use drugs. He doesn’t condone their behavior, so they will be fired. However, Bigus paid attention to the audition.
We must be honest because we demand honesty from others. Unfortunately, part of the team violated our principles and values, and the consequence will be tough personnel changes. This behavior is the choice of adults, but everyone in a conscious team is responsible for this choice. We also note that in the title of the video being circulated, in addition to the unpleasant truth, there is also manipulation. We are talking about the alleged use by journalists. This is not true and you can see it from the video itself,” Bigus said.
In a comment to Babel, Deputy Editor-in-Chief Maxim Opanasenko said that the editors will contact law enforcement officers through surveillance and at the same time independently try to find out who is behind this or which law enforcement agency. He said the videos are a compilation of conversations spanning several months, and in some cases nearly a year. That is, the employees were listened to for a long time. The editors suggest that this may be an attempt to pressure.
The wiretapping and surveillance were illegal, and the goals of the recorders were clear. But this is not an excuse because of what we saw in the video,” commented the founder of the project, Bihus, and stated that there would be “tough personnel changes” in the team, and everyone who collaborates with Bihus.Info will undergo drug tests.
The head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Freedom of Speech, Yurchyshyn, said that “a journalist’s ID cannot be a basis for breaking the law,” while “hidden filming, leaking videos and pressure on the media are unacceptable.”
