The Australian government has withdrawn 45 MRH-90 Taipan helicopters from service and decided to scrap them. It comes after four soldiers were killed during a training exercise in Queensland. Ukraine has requested to receive these helicopters in December 2023, but may not receive them. This was reported by local media ABC.
Now the Ukrainian community in Australia is putting pressure on the government to transfer the helicopters to Kyiv.
For some reason, the Australian government wants us all, taxpayers, to pay about $2 billion to dismantle them, bury them in Australian soil, and pollute the environment instead of helping a friend in need, said one of the participants in the Ukrainian community rally in Sydney . .
Ukrainian Ambassador to Australia Vasily Miroshnichenko expressed hope that there is still an opportunity to transfer helicopters to Ukraine. However, so far the Ukrainian authorities have not received a response to the request for the transfer of this equipment.
A spokesman for the Australian Department of Defense told reporters that the department “disposes of everything in an environmentally friendly and cost-effective way.”
As you know, the MRH-90 Taipan is a multi-purpose helicopter with a length of 16.13 m and a height of 5.23 m. Its maximum speed is 300 km/h.
Let us recall that the commander of the Ground Forces, Alexander Syrsky, said that the Ukrainian Armed Forces need more equipment to conduct air combat operations – American A-10 Thunderbolt attack aircraft and AH-64 Apache and AH-1 Super Cobra and UH-60 Black attack helicopters.
