British monarch Elizabeth II died on September 8, 2022 at the age of 96 at Balmoral Castle.
The former Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain died in her sleep. This was announced by his secretary Edward Young, the Daily Mail reports.
In particular, in his notes he said that the sovereign “died very peacefully.” These records are currently kept in the Royal Archives.
“Very peaceful. In her sleep. Gone. Old age. She was not aware of what was happening. No pain,” Edward Young recorded.
Royal author Robert Hardman, in his new biography of the current monarch, Charles III: New King, New Court: The Inside Story, shares that shortly after Sir Edward wrote his note, a footman brought of the locked red box of papers found on his deathbed.
Opening it, they found two sealed letters: one for his son and heir, now King Charles III, and the other for Sir Edward himself.
Although their contents are unlikely to be made public, the existence of the letters suggests that 96-year-old Elizabeth calmly accepted that her time on this earth was coming to an end.
The box also contains Elizabeth II’s last papers and the royal order that selects candidates for the prestigious Order of Merit for “exceptionally meritorious service.”
“Even on her deathbed, she had work to do. And she did it,” Hardman wrote of the late queen’s unparalleled devotion to duty.
Princess Anne was previously reported to be worried that Queen Elizabeth would find it difficult to organize her funeral if she died at Balmoral.
