The issue of returning Ukrainians liable for military service to their homeland was discussed with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky during the visit of the Ukrainian head of state to Tallinn this week. Prime Minister of Estonia Kaia Kallas stated this in an interview with The Kyiv Independent.
According to her, the Ukrainian leader said that there are Ukrainians who directly fight the occupiers, and there are those who pay taxes in Ukraine. The head of state also remembered Ukrainians living abroad, in particular in Estonia.
Kallas emphasized that if these Ukrainian citizens comply with the rules, then they have every right to be in Estonia. She added that the Estonian authorities will not extradite these individuals. She also called on Kyiv to encourage the return of those liable for military service on a voluntary basis.
Therefore, we will not do anything on our part to hand over these people. It is up to Ukraine to contact the people here and ask them to return to help their homeland,” she noted.
Let us recall that the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Rustem Umerov commented on the possible conscription of Ukrainian men living abroad. According to him, the Ministry of Defense has information about the number of Ukrainian men of military age who are in foreign countries and have already “consolidated all databases.”
