Mars had a taste of human life before humans even got there.
NASA announced Wednesday that its Perseverance Mars Rover has detected “something unexpected”: a piece of debris on the surface of a red planet.
The wreckage was a piece of thermal blanket that NASA scientists believe could have collapsed during a rover crash. A robot researcher wrapped the material to control its temperature.
My team noticed something unexpected: it was a piece of thermal blanket that they thought might have come from my landing phase, a rocket jet pack that I brought with me on landing day 2021. pic.twitter.com/O4rIaEABLu

This glossy foil is part of a thermal blanket, a material used to control temperature. Surprising to find it here: my descent phase crashed about 2km away. Then where did this piece fall on it or did the wind blow on it? pic.twitter.com/uVx3VdYfi8

Here is the part of the JPL team that wrapped me in thermal blankets. Think of them as a tailor on a spaceship. They work with sewing machines and other tools to link these unique materials.

Persistence fell on Mars in February 2021, marking NASA’s ninth mission to the planet. According to the robot’s Twitter bio, his hobbies are photography, rock collecting, and off-roading.
So far, only unmanned spacecraft has landed on Mars, but NASA hopes the first humans will land on Mars by 2030.
