The state secretary of the country’s defense minister, Nils Hilmer, was forced to admit this to members of the German parliament:
So far we have not been able to arrest a single drone, nor their pilots.
Suspicious drones are spotted over military training grounds and barracks in Germany on a weekly basis, a problem the army has long been aware of. In October 2022, General Carsten Breuer, who led the territorial command at the time, reported the appearance of drones.
This was especially true in places where the Bundeswehr trains Ukrainian military personnel.
As a matter of urgency, Breuer ordered the military police to be trained in the use of the HP 47 jammer. It could intercept signals and land UAVs, although the effectiveness of the HP 47 had not yet been sufficiently studied.
Shortly thereafter, Breuer was promoted to Inspector General of the Bundeswehr, but nothing happened in terms of anti-drone defense.
Defense expert Markus Faber told BILD:
Drones are regularly spotted over the Klitz military training ground, where the Bundeswehr trains Ukrainians on the Leo-1. At other bases, multiple drones sometimes enter the airspace at the same time. This is clearly organized and testifies to Russia.
The Bundeswehr also assumes that the Russian Federation is behind the flights of these drones, but this cannot be proven, since not a single drone was destroyed or landed.
On November 15, 2023, the Bundeswehr founded a task force to combat illegal UAV flights. Its chairman was Brigadier General Wolfgang Jordan from the Army Command. However, in these two months there seem to be no tangible results yet.
