On Friday, January 5, the highest American court said it would consider the issue of disqualifying the ex-president from the internal party elections (primaries) of the Republican Party based on an amendment to the Constitution prohibiting participation in “insurrection or insurrection.” The Supreme Court justices recognized the need for a quick decision, and debate on the case will take place on February 8. This was reported by the AP agency.
The Supreme Court’s decision could be made before March 5, when the so-called Super Tuesday takes place. The largest number of primaries in the United States is scheduled on this day.
According to media reports, the Supreme Court will consider the meaning and scope of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution for the first time. This amendment was adopted after the American Civil War and was hardly used. This amendment bars officials who have “engaged in insurrection or rebellion” from holding U.S. public office.
Recall that in December, the Colorado Supreme Court banned Donald Trump from participating in the 2024 presidential election in the state. The reason for this was the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021, when Trump supporters seized the US Congress.
