Ukrainian refugees in Scotland could be homeless

In 2023, the Scottish Government allocated funding to local authorities to provide temporary housing for refugees from the war in Ukraine.

The Scottish Government has warned local authorities that funding to help Ukrainians settle will not continue. After that, city halls announced that they had to stop supporting hotels where Ukrainians live. The Scotsman wrote this on Friday, January 5.

“Last year, local authorities received £10 million to cover the cost of short-term housing for refugees, but this funding is no longer available,” the newspaper wrote.

The City of Edinburgh Council responded to the announcement and said the lack of funding would have “unintended consequences” and increase homelessness in the city.

In turn, the leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats, Alex Cole-Hamilton, said that the Scottish National Party in power “no longer cares about Ukrainian refugees.”

COSLA will meet with Scotland’s Social Justice Minister next week to look at ways to resolve the situation.

In November 2023, 17,463 refugees from Ukraine arrived in Scotland under the “super sponsorship” scheme. Most of them, due to the lack of alternatives, were placed in hotels and on cruise ships.

We remind you that Finland will pay 5,300 euros to refugees who return to their homeland.
