The President of the European Commission called the agreement of all 27 member countries of the European Union on the decision to create a Ukrainian fund a top priority.
The European Commission is preparing an alternative aid package for Ukraine if, during the summit on February 1, the EU countries did not approve a four-year support program for Ukraine worth 50 billion euros. About this Friday, January 5, stated Head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen at a conference attended by Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo.
“The main priority is to get the agreement of all 27 EU countries, but we are already working on operational solutions that can be used otherwise. Before Christmas on December 25, we transferred 1.5 billion euros to Ukraine, the last tranche of our 18 billion euros program for 2023. So, Kiev has funds for the beginning of this year,” said the head of the EC.
At the same time, Brussels has “a small reserve of time… to achieve results” with EU leaders agreeing to the creation of a Ukrainian fund, added the President of the European Commission.
He did not disclose details of the alternative aid package.
In turn, the Belgian prime minister expressed hope that the 50 billion euro aid program could be agreed without problems.
As you know, Prime Minister Viktor Orban is threatening to block all EU aid to Ukraine, as well as further movement of our country in the bloc, if the EU leaders do not agree to re consider their entire strategy for supporting Kyiv.
Later, Orban said that Hungary would agree not to veto the EU’s proposal to allocate funds for Ukraine in the amount of 50 billion euros, but that Brussels should unfreeze the 30 billion euros earmarked for Hungary.
