Buenos Aires declared sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, which Britain considered its own.
Argentina wants to start negotiations with Britain on the return of the Falkland Islands, a British overseas territory, to the South American state. This was announced on Wednesday, January 3, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Argentina.
The document issued states that Great Britain “occupied by force” on January 3, 1833, these territories in which Argentina “from the beginning as an independent country exercised sovereign rights” as the heir of the -Spanish possessions in South America.
The constitution states that restoring sovereignty to the islands “in accordance with international law and with respect for the way of life of their inhabitants is the constant and urgent goal of the Argentine people,” the Argentine Foreign Ministry said.
The Government of Argentina therefore reiterates its readiness to continue bilateral negotiations that will provide a solution to the sovereignty dispute in accordance with the provisions of the relevant resolutions of the UN General Assembly.
The documents adopted by the UN General Assembly state that the territorial dispute between Argentina and Great Britain must be resolved by the governments of both countries through bilateral negotiations, taking into account the interests of the islanders.
At the same time, the Foreign Ministry said that the UN, especially the Secretary General of the Organization, should be involved to continue the negotiations.

Let’s remember that in 2016, the UN Commission recognized the waters surrounding the disputed Falkland Islands as Argentinean.
