The State Department emphasized that neither Washington nor Tel Aviv were involved in the explosions at Soleimani’s tomb, in which more than a hundred people were killed.
The United States had nothing to do with the series of explosions in Iran and has no reason to believe that Israel was involved in the attack. US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said this in a briefing on Wednesday, January 3.
More than 100 people were killed and more than 170 people were injured in explosions at a ceremony honoring General Soleimani, who was killed by a US drone in 2020. No one claimed responsibility for the blasts.
“We express our condolences to the victims and families of those killed in these terrible explosions. I want to respond to some baseless allegations that are being spread. First, the United States was not involved in this in any way. […] Second, we have no reason to believe that Israel is involved in this,” Miller said.
He added that it was too early to say who carried out the attack. Miller also stressed that allegations of possible US involvement in the explosions are unfounded.
According to the spokesperson of the State Department, the United States remains very concerned about the risk of the conflict spreading in the region, both inside Israel – in the north or West Bank, and outside Israel, in other countries in the region. As Miller said, this level of concern is no higher now than ever.
Let’s recall that on January 3, two explosions occurred during a mourning ceremony on the occasion of the anniversary of the death of General Qassem Soleimani in Iran.
On January 3, 2020, General Soleimani was killed on the orders of Donald Trump as a result of a US Air Force strike. The reason was the attack on the US Embassy in Baghdad.
Qasem Soleimani led the Quds Force, a branch of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps that conducted operations overseas. Suleiman is the ideologist of Iran’s military foreign policy.
