This winter, Russian troops are primarily trying to strike at the defense industry, and not at energy facilities, as was the case last winter.

The press service of the UK Ministry of Defense reported this today, January 3, citing intelligence data.
Since December 29, 2023, Russia has increased the intensity of long-range missile strikes against Ukraine. Its military has deployed a significant portion of the stockpiles of air-launched cruise missiles and ballistic missiles it has amassed in recent months, it said. The targets of the recent strikes were most likely Ukrainian defense industry facilities.
The department notes that the decision to attack the defense industry may be temporary, but indicates a change in the approach to shelling Ukraine.
Russian planners will almost certainly recognize the increasing importance of defense industry capacity as they prepare for a long-term war, the British Ministry of Defense says.
