At least 57 people died in the earthquake in Japan. Kyodo News reported this on Tuesday, January 2.
The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.6, destroyed houses on the Noto Peninsula and caused a fire in the city of Wajima in Ishikawa Prefecture.
The full extent of the damage is not yet known as debris and destroyed roads are hampering rescue efforts. It is also unknown how many actually died.
About 90 percent of the houses were completely or almost completely destroyed. Residents of central Japan were evacuated due to the threat of a tsunami. 57,360 people were evacuated by the authorities.
