Journalists suggest that this bomber proved to be more reliable and easier to maintain than the Tu-160.
The Russian Army is actively using Tu-95MS bombers for missile attacks on Ukraine. The massive attack on January 2 was no exception, as the Russians fired dozens of missiles. This was reported by Defense Express.
“It should be assumed … that during the months-long missile attack campaign in Ukraine, the Tu-95MS bomber proved to be more reliable and easier to maintain than the Tu-160,” the publication wrote.
Production of the main version of the Tu-95 began in 1954. Therefore, the main Tu-95 and its analogue Tu-95MS are separated by 30 years of production and various types of improvements, about 10 serial modifications .
In the 1990s. during the “optimization” of strategic aviation, the Russians valued the Tu-95MS; they even acquired more than 10 aircraft from Kazakhstan and received four of the same bombers from Ukraine in exchange for gas. Older modifications of the Tu-95 were removed to save resources.
According to The Military Balance, by the end of 2021, the Russian Federation will have 60 Tu-95MS aircraft. However, the actual number of combat-ready bombers of this type may be less. In particular, for attacks on Ukraine, the Russian troops raised in the atmosphere a maximum of 20 Tu-95MS aircraft, for a joint flight with the Chinese strategic aviation in 2022 – a maximum of 10 units.
