The creation of the NATO-Ukraine Council is one of the three elements of the package to bring Ukraine closer to NATO and Alliance membership.
A meeting of the highest military body of the North Atlantic Alliance – the military committee, within the framework of which a meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Council in the format of the commanders of the Armed Forces of the Alliance is scheduled to take place in Brussels in January 17-18, 2024. The NATO press service reported this on Wednesday, December 20.
“At the NATO military committee meeting, its participants intend to discuss issues of strategic importance for the Alliance,” the statement said.
It was noted that the meeting will be chaired by the head of the military committee, Admiral Rob Bauer. The event will also be attended by the Chiefs of General Staff of the North Atlantic Alliance. They will be joined by Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), General Christopher Cavoli, and Supreme Allied Commander for Transformation (SACT), General Philippe Lavigne. NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Joane will also join the military committee for the first meeting to review key priorities and challenges facing the Alliance.
NATO will also discuss the problems of the defense industry and operational planning and support.
“Defense leaders will discuss a roadmap for adapting to current and emerging threats,” the statement said.
Defense leaders will discuss integrated air and missile defense to improve readiness and interoperability in times of peace, crisis and conflict.
In the fourth session, the Chiefs of Defense Staff will provide further guidance on NATO’s military deterrence and defense priorities.
“At the last meeting of the first day, there will be a meeting of the Chiefs of General Staff in the format of the Ukraine-NATO Council. They will discuss the war of occupation of Russia against Ukraine, the situation on the ground and the subsequent support for Ukraine from to NATO,” the message said.
The second day will begin with defense chiefs meeting with their counterparts from the Partner Interoperability Group (PIAG) from Australia, Austria, Ireland, New Zealand and Switzerland.
“The countries of the PIAG have a non-alliance status that gives them an individual security agreement that allows them to share classified information and participate in NATO training and exercises. Discussions are currently focused on and future military interoperability capabilities,” the document explains.
In the next session, NATO and visiting defense chiefs will meet with their counterparts from NATO’s Indo-Pacific partners: Australia, Japan, New Zealand and the Republic of Korea.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico opposed Ukraine’s entry into NATO. The head of the Slovak government fears that this is allegedly “leading to the Third World War.”
