This decision was made in Vienna after Ukraine excluded the banking group Raiffeisen Bank International from the list of international sponsors of the war. The Austrian authorities insisted on excluding the bank from this “black list” and this was supposed to motivate companies doing business in Russia and supporting the aggressor army in the form of paying taxes. This was reported by Reuters.
The Austrian clause on sanctions has been cancelled, the agency quotes one of the European diplomats.
It is noted that the Ukrainian list of international sponsors of the war does not have legal force, but has symbolic significance because it increases public pressure on Raiffeisen to leave the territory of the aggressor country. The Austrian bank has previously announced its readiness to do this, but this has not yet happened.
Let us recall that on December 12, EU ambassadors did not agree on the 12th package of sanctions against Russia because Vienna complained that Ukraine had included the Raiffeisen Bank International banking group in the list of international war sponsors.
And the leaders of the European Union voted for the 12-pack of sanctions against Russia in the absence of Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer, because he was not in the room at the time the decision was made.
