On December 14, the European Council decided to start negotiations on accession to the European Union with Ukraine and Moldova, and also granted candidate status to Georgia.
The European Council’s decision to start negotiations with Ukraine on EU accession does not contain any additional conditions. This was announced on Thursday, December 14, by Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olga Stefanishina in a telethon.
He emphasized that Kyiv did not expect that “the decision will be so clean.”
“The proposal for a decision, presented by the President of the European Council Charles Michel to the decision of the leaders, was fully adopted in this form – that is, the decision to open membership negotiations for Ukraine and Moldova. Period. Without any conditions,” said Stefanishyna.
He noted that Ukraine will begin negotiations on the next steps to join the European Union on Monday, December 18.
“I want to assure you that literally 15 minutes after the decision was made, I received a call from the European Commission. On Monday, December 18, we will discuss the next steps,” he said.
Stefanishina added, there is a work plan.
“But now, of course, we will consider the geopolitical chessboard and determine the deadline based on it,” said the Deputy Prime Minister.
The head of the European Council, Charles Michel, said that the leaders of the European Union decided to start negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova on accession to the EU.
The decision of EU leaders means that the European Commission will start preparing technical aspects of membership negotiations with Ukraine (the so-called negotiating framework) without further delay.
