Germany admitted the mistakes of its policy towards the Russian Federation

German Social Democrats admit it is a mistake to assume that strengthening economic ties will help democratize Russia.

Germany has had a wrong policy with Russia and its President Vladimir Putin for years. It was discussed at the conference of the Social Democratic Party, the oldest party in Germany, whose representative, in particular, is the current Chancellor Olaf Scholz, reports n-tv.de.

In particular, SPD leader Lars Klingbeil said it was a mistake not to be far from Putin’s system earlier. Another party leader, the leader of the SPD faction in the Bundestag, Rolf Mützenich, admitted that he “completely underestimated” the Russian president’s imperial mindset.

The party conference also discussed organizing counteraction to the Kremlin’s destructive policies.

“Today we are talking about security arrangements against Russia. Germany stands firmly on the side of the invaded Ukraine,” Klingbeil emphasized.

At the same time, Mützenich opposed attempts to discredit the SPD’s ten-year policy of détente. According to him, it is “shameful” to put it “as a war of aggression” against Ukraine. The politician reiterated his call to use diplomatic opportunities to end conflicts.

“Russia’s war of conquest against Ukraine shows that we have not always correctly assessed the events of recent years. It is a mistake to follow the assumption that strengthening economic relations will help the democratization of Russia. This has led Germany to become unilaterally dependent on Russia in energy policy.” , the party organ report said.

The document also states that there will be no normalization of relations with Russia as it pursues its imperialist goal of occupying and subjugating sovereign states.

“As long as there is no fundamental change in Russia, Europe’s security from Russia needs to be fixed,” the resolution said.

The SPD congress also decided that the European Union should overcome the ineffective fragmentation of its defense policy and arms industry and create conditions for the accession of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia as soon as possible.

“To preserve Europe’s ability to act, the EU must also move away from the principle of unity in the field of foreign policy,” the document notes.

In addition, politicians say that a strong transatlantic relationship is “not a given” and depends on whether Joe Biden or Donald Trump wins the US presidential election next year.

The proposal also calls for a European resilience strategy towards China. Separation, given the close ties between the German and European economies and China, “is not the right answer.”

It was previously reported that the European Union is afraid of Trump’s coming to power, because the return of the former US President, in addition to the refusal to help Ukraine, is full of NATO integrity.
