Washington believes that the draft resolution is a hasty, unbalanced text, detached from reality.
The United States on Friday, December 8, vetoed a UN Security Council resolution that called for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, Reuters reports.
However, thirteen other members voted in favor of the draft resolution proposed by the United Arab Emirates. Great Britain abstained.
The US and Israel oppose the ceasefire because they believe it will only benefit Hamas.
Deputy US Ambassador to the UN Robert Wood said that the draft resolution is a hasty, unbalanced text, detached from reality: “We do not support this resolution’s calls for an unsustainable ceasefire, which will only sow the seeds for the next war.”
The US proposed significant changes to the draft, including condemning the October 7 Hamas attacks, which Israel said killed 1,200 people and took 240 hostages.
Let’s remember that on November 15, the UN Security Council, in the fifth attempt, adopted a resolution calling for the introduction of “humanitarian pauses and corridors” in the Gaza Strip.
