Viktor Orban, a friend of Putin and Prime Minister of Hungary, called for the decision on Ukraine to be removed from the agenda of the EU summit.

He wrote a letter to the President of the European Council, Charles Michel. This follows from a copy of the document obtained by Radio Liberty.

In the letter, the Hungarian Prime Minister criticizes the recommendation to open accession negotiations, calling it “the end of the EU’s enlargement policy as an objective, values-based instrument” and complains about the “lack of opportunity to discuss it beforehand.”

He also criticizes the EC’s “unreasonable and unrealistic proposal” for 50 billion euros in funding for Ukraine, calling for discussions to take into account “the political and financial realities in member states.”
