Denis Shmigal confirmed the information about the conversation with Robert Fico, but did not mention a possible meeting with him.
Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico spoke on the phone with the head of the Ukrainian government, Denis Smigal. They agreed to meet on the Slovak-Ukrainian border in early 2024, Fico said on Facebook on Monday, December 4.
“Today I had an announced telephone conversation with the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denis Shmygal. I confirmed Slovakia’s interest in providing assistance to Ukraine in the humanitarian and civil spheres,” he wrote.
At the same time, Fico excludes the supply of weapons and ammunition to Ukraine from state and army warehouses.
“We do not believe in a military solution to the conflict in Ukraine, because it only leads to unnecessary bloodshed without results,” the prime minister said.
However, he added that Slovakia will continue to ban grain imports.
“Our national interests sometimes conflict with the interests of Ukraine, so I confirm that we will continue to ban the import of agricultural products of Ukraine on the territory of Slovakia, because we will fight against our own farmers,” he said. Fico emphasized.
He also said that Slovakia is ready to help Ukraine in denuclearization, provide special equipment, cooperate in the energy sector, including monitoring civilian nuclear facilities, and provide humanitarian aid.
“We will meet with Prime Minister Smigal at the Slovak-Ukrainian border at the beginning of 2024, the topic of the meeting will be cooperation in the aforementioned sectors,” Fico announced.
In this regard, Smigal confirmed the information about the conversation with Fico on the topics mentioned above, but did not mention a possible meeting with him.
Earlier, the Prime Minister of Slovakia said that the war in Ukraine is a “frozen conflict” and that it seems impossible to solve it by sending weapons to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Fico also spoke in favor of normalizing relations with Russia.
