Sweden, along with Finland, decided to abandon their long-standing policy of non-alignment in military alliances and applied for NATO membership after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg once again called on Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to allow Sweden to become a member of the North Atlantic Alliance. The AP reported this on Friday, December 1.
According to the Secretary General, in a meeting with Erdogan on the sidelines of the climate summit in Dubai, he called on Turkey to complete the process of ratifying the protocol on Sweden’s membership in NATO.
“I met with President Erdogan and reiterated that it is time to complete Sweden’s accession process,” he said.
At the same time, he struggled to say when he expected the ratification process to be completed.
It is known that at the end of October, the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan submitted a request for the consideration of the parliament. The document was sent to the relevant committee, which did not approve it.
We remind you that in 2022 Sweden submitted its application to join NATO. Since then, it has been adopted by all NATO member countries except Hungary and Turkey. On October 23, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan signed a protocol on Sweden’s accession to NATO.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that Sweden has fulfilled all the conditions for obtaining full membership in the Alliance. In his opinion, the country should become a member of NATO “no later than” the meeting of foreign ministers of the Alliance scheduled for November 28-29.
An exchange worthy of a concession: why Erdogan let Sweden join NATO
