The United States Court of Appeals ruled on December 1 that Trump can be held civilly liable for the January 6, 2021 storming of the Capitol. A panel of the District of Columbia judge found that the ex-president personally incited his supporters to attack the Capitol on the day of the riots. That is, he is not protected by presidential immunity from lawsuits. This was reported by Reuters.
It is noted that the court’s decision opens the way to legal battles from US Capitol police officers and Democratic lawmakers seeking to hold Trump accountable for violence by his supporters during the riots on January 6, 2021.
Police officers James Blassingame and Sidney Hamby filed a lawsuit against Trump – they believe that he is responsible for the injuries they received during the assault. Three more lawsuits were filed by members of the House of Representatives.
Trump stated that his speech was related to a “matter of public concern” and was part of his official duties.
Let us recall that in October a US court began considering the case of Trump’s possible disqualification from the presidential election. They must determine whether the attack on the Capitol in January 2021 is grounds to ban Trump from participating in the 2024 presidential election.
