Russia’s withdrawal from the CFE Treaty is the latest in a series of actions that systematically undermine Euro-Atlantic security, the Alliance said.
NATO countries have decided to suspend their participation in the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE) after Russia’s final withdrawal from it. This was reported on the Alliance website on Tuesday, November 7.
Thus, NATO countries condemned Russia’s decision to withdraw from the CFE Treaty and its aggressive war against Ukraine, which contradicts the goals of the treaty.
“Russia’s withdrawal is the latest in a series of actions that systematically undermine Euro-Atlantic security… Recognizing the role of the CFE Treaty as the basis of the Euro-Atlantic security architecture, a situation where following the member states of the Alliance. to the agreement, but Russia will not, will be unviable. Therefore, as a consequence, the member said “The CFE Treaty intends to suspend the CFE Treaty as long as necessary, in accordance with their rights under international law. This decision is fully supported by all NATO members, ” said the statement.
It is noted that the members of the North Atlantic Alliance remain united in their commitment to effective conventional arms control as an important element of Euro-Atlantic security.
“This complements the deterrence and defense of the Alliance, which the Member States have decided to further strengthen,” the statement said.
Earlier on Tuesday it became known that Russia has finally withdrawn from the CFE Treaty. Moscow said it was convinced it was right and accused NATO of “inciting conflict” in Ukraine.
The CFE Treaty was signed on November 19, 1990 in Paris by representatives of 16 NATO member states and six Warsaw Pact Organization (WTO) member states – the USSR and its five allies. The CFE Treaty came into force after the collapse of the “socialist camp”, the Warsaw Warsaw Party and the Soviet Union – on November 9, 1992. The treaty established legally binding limits on the main categories of conventional military weapons of member states.
In 2004, the Russian Federation ratified the Agreement on the Adaptation of the CFE Treaty on November 19, 1999 (not implemented).
The parties to the agreement demanded that Russia fulfill its obligations to withdraw troops from Georgia and Moldova. In 2007, the Russian Federation suspended its participation in the treaty, and in 2015, participation in meetings of the treaty’s general advisory group.
