Civilians in the Gaza Strip are suffering Israeli attacks, and Hamas is using them as a shield, the UN said.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. He made the corresponding statement on Monday, November 6, in a briefing.
Speaking to reporters, Guterres said Gaza was becoming “a graveyard for children, where hundreds of minors are dying or injured every day.”
According to him, hospitals, refugee camps, mosques and UN facilities are suffering from Israeli strikes. Meanwhile, Hamas uses civilians as human shields and continues to fire into Israel.
“No party to an armed conflict is above international humanitarian law,” he stressed.
In addition, he pointed out that many representatives of international organizations and journalists were killed during the conflict.
“More journalists have been killed in a four-week period than in any conflict in the last three decades. More UN humanitarian workers have been killed than in any comparable period in the history of our organization,” the secretary general continued.
He also mentioned that the hostages held by Hamas should be released immediately.
The Health Ministry of Gaza, which is controlled by Hamas, said more than 10,000 people had died in the fighting that began after the group’s militants attacked Israel on October 7.
On October 31, the Israel Defense Forces entered the third phase of the war against Hamas. The IDF has expanded its ground invasion of the Gaza Strip.
