A new aircraft powered by biofuel and solar energy will make its first environmentally friendly flight over the Atlantic Ocean.
The UK Civil Aviation Authority has issued the first permit for a transatlantic flight using biofuel. It is scheduled for November 28 and will take place from London Heathrow Airport to New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport. The department announced this on Monday, November 6.
“The flight will be the world’s first transatlantic flight using 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF),” the statement said.
The flight was organized by the British airline Virgin Atlantic. It will still need to get approval from regulators in the US, Ireland and Canada, as the flight will be operated through their airspace.
The flight will take place as part of a British government program to introduce more environmentally friendly practices into civil aviation.
Aerospace corporation Boeing will begin producing aircraft in 2030 that will run entirely on biofuel.
The world’s largest maritime cargo carrier, the Danish company Maersk, presented the world’s first ship running on biofuel (methanol).
