A powerful earthquake on the Nepal-India border has killed more than 20 people. Dozens more were injured.
At least 22 people were killed and dozens injured in a 6.4 magnitude earthquake that struck western Nepal on Friday, November 3, Reuters reports.
The agency quoted witnesses as saying that houses in the area fell and buildings shook in New Delhi, India.
At least 20 people were rushed to hospital with injuries, Jajarkot district spokesman Suresh Sunar said.
“We are collecting details, but because of the cold and night it is difficult to get information from distant places,” he said.
The National Seismological Center of Nepal reported that the earthquake occurred at 23:47 (20:47 Kyiv time) in Jajarkot district of Karnali province. Jajarkot is located approximately 500 km west of the capital Kathmandu.
“We have confirmed reports that five members of a family have died in Atbiskot village. There are reports of more deaths. We cannot confirm this,” said Namaraj Bhattarai, a police officer in nearby Rukum West district.
Residents said the tremors were felt in nearby areas and as far away as Kathmandu.
The German Geosciences Research Center (GFZ) recorded an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 and a depth of 10 km.
