The need for the document arose considering the conclusions from the war in Ukraine, where both sides are actively using various types of drones on the battlefield.
NATO plans to adopt a counter-drone doctrine by the end of this year. The document, which is supposed to advise Alliance members on a multi-layered defense against various types of unmanned aerial vehicles, will be a first in history, reports Defense News.
It was noted that the doctrine will also specify some factors for organizing the general training of operators of anti-drone systems.
Senior Advisor to NATO’s Emerging Security Challenges Division, Claudio Palestini, emphasized that such an “anti-drone” doctrine is already in development. According to him, the task of developing the doctrine was given at the beginning of this year.
The core doctrine will be a handbook released in 2019, “which places great emphasis on setting guidelines for effective anti-drone warfare.” But if the handbook, which is a “preliminary document”, is about 600 pages, then the doctrine will be stated in 70-80 pages.
It is not yet clear what principles will be set out in the document. However, it is known that the doctrine will contain some recommendations for the commissioning of the system (Counter Unmanned Aerial Systems), the integration of multi-domain and multi-level solutions and general standards for the training of UAV operators .
The document should be sent for approval by NATO’s Committee for the Development of Military Operational Standards in the coming weeks. And the doctrine should be agreed upon by the end of this year. The first document of this kind in history will be implemented by purchasing some systems, ammunition, etc.
At the same time, Claudio Palestini admitted that the need for such a doctrine arose considering the conclusions from the war in Ukraine, where both the Ukrainian military and the occupying army of the Russian Federation actively use other’ t different types of drones on the battlefield. .
Earlier it was reported that the State Border Service of Ukraine created groups of “drone hunters.”
