This is stated in the US intelligence report. According to Reuters and DW, this document was received by US embassies in more than one hundred countries in America, Europe, Asia and Africa for the purpose of transfer to local governments.
In another 17 countries, Moscow’s efforts were “less pronounced.” US intelligence warns that Russia is using spies, social media and Russian state media to undermine public faith in the integrity of democratic elections around the world.
This is a global phenomenon. Our data indicates that top Russian officials, particularly in the Kremlin, see value in such influence operations and consider them effective, the newspaper writes.
China also interferes in other countries’ elections, but does not use such tactics. Beijing has repeatedly rejected such accusations.
At the same time, Russia “disseminated and amplified information aimed at undermining confidence in the 2020 US elections.” The success of this campaign, as well as a disinformation campaign about the COVID-19 pandemic, prompted the Russian Federation to intensify similar operations around the world.
The US intelligence report also gives an example of an election that took place in 2020 in an unnamed European country. According to Washington, the Russian FSB secretly worked to intimidate election officials, organize protests on election day, and “sabotage voting abroad.”
Washington recommends combating such activities by Moscow by introducing sanctions against the Russian Federation, exchanging information between the governments of different countries, expelling Russian spies and banning the entry of suspicious persons into the country.
