Now it’s December 31st. That is, by the end of the year they have been given the task of reaching the administrative borders of the Donetsk region. They understand: if they take the height of Avdeevka, then it will be easier for them to reach Pokrovsk, and so on. Therefore, Avdeevka is very important for them,” said the head of the Avdeevka city military administration, Vitaly Barabash, on Ukrainian Radio.
According to him, the Russians are “simply erasing Avdeevka.”
In his opinion, Avdiivka is strategically important because, firstly, it is very close to Donetsk.
Between the extreme streets of Avdeevka and Donetsk there is just over 6 km. And most importantly, this is a strategic height. All of Avdiivka and most of the areas around are commanding heights, so this is important for us. Why is this important to them? Firstly, they want to capture these heights. Do not give us the opportunity to control a very serious section of the front near Donetsk. This is more than 50 km of the front line. It’s a lot. Moreover, this is the front line, which is close to Donetsk. Secondly, this will still slightly distract attention and not give the opportunity to transfer our forces to other directions. Because they really have problems both in the Bakhmut direction and in the Zaporozhye direction. In this way, they are trying to “fetter” our forces a little in the Avdeevsky direction,” Barabash said.
Another important thing for them is that the Russians were waiting for the main blow of our counteroffensive in Donetsk.
There was a lot of such information in telegram channels. And they are now presenting it in such a way that they prevented the likely main blow of the counter-offensive precisely on the capital of the “sub-republic”, that they were the first to begin these offensive actions. Well, and probably one of the most important things for them is that they needed at least some kind of “victory.” They haven’t been doing very well with this lately. And it was for this that Avdiivka was chosen, which has been nearby since 2014, however, indestructible, which they cannot take, no matter what they have done in all these years.
Barabash said that Russia has set the next date for entering the administrative borders of the Donetsk region – now it is December 31.
The Russian army understands: if we take the heights of Avdeevka, then it will be easier for them to reach Pokrovsk, and so on. Therefore, Avdeevka is very important for them.
