The start of negotiations on the membership of Ukraine will begin during the presidency of Belgium of the Council of the EU, said Igor Zhovkva.
Negotiations on the accession of Ukraine to the European Union should begin in the first half of 2024. This was announced on Wednesday, October 11, by the Deputy Head of the Presidential Office, Igor Zhovkva, following a meeting between President Vladimir Zelensky and the Prime Minister of Belgium Alexander De Croo.
“It is during the Belgian presidency of the Council of the EU (first half of 2024) that the actual start of negotiations on the membership of Ukraine in the EU will begin,” he wrote.
According to Zhovkva, the Belgian presidency is not limited to symbolism. He emphasized that the ally will support Ukraine from the very “institutional heart” of the European Union.
In this regard, Olga Stefanyshyn, Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, said in the telethon that EU member states may impose additional conditions for Ukraine to start accession negotiations.
“The most skeptical states now support the movement of Ukraine before the negotiations begin. We feel the support here, but we will negotiate with each state individually,” he said.
According to Stefanishina, this means that probably by the end of the year Ukraine will need to implement additional agreements that will appear among member states as an additional condition for the start of negotiations.
Earlier, President Vladimir Zelensky called for negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU to begin in 2023. In his opinion, our country is fully prepared for this.
At the same time, the European Commission said that there is a real hope of opening negotiations on the accession of Ukraine to the EU in the winter. But to achieve this, a lot still needs to be done.
