On this day, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of Saints Theophan the Merciful and Venerable Kyriakos.
Theophanes lived in the Syrian city of Gaza. He was rich and helped the poor and sick. He invited travelers to his house with no money to pay for lodging. Because of his generosity and responsiveness, people nicknamed him Gracious.
However, the Lord deprived him of wealth and health. The future saint bravely endured hardships. His body swelled and decomposed, emitting a horrible smell. But Feofan had the strength not only to endure himself, but to support his wife, who had lost hope.
When he felt that his last hour was near, a terrible storm broke out accompanied by thunder and lightning. The husband began to sob, realizing that he would not be able to bury his wife properly. But Feofan reassured him, saying that as soon as he moved, the storm would stop. And it happened. After death, the saint’s body was completely cleansed of wounds and began to secrete a delicious healing aromatic oil.
Monk Kyriakos is from Corinth. He lived to be 109 years old. The hermit received his nickname because he often changed residences.
Traditions and rituals
People called this holiday “merciful” for the hot, sometimes cloudy weather on this day. On this day, hunters go out at dawn in search of the birthday hare. Until the end of the day there are festivities with traditional hunting stories. The belief says: the bigger and fatter the hunted animal is, the more luck this year will bring to the hunter.
