Early parliamentary elections were held in Slovakia, where the opposition party Smer-SD, led by former Prime Minister Robert Fico, won.
Slovakia accuses Russia of meddling in parliamentary elections. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country summoned a representative of the Russian embassy due to the statements of the director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, Sergei Naryshkin, regarding the “American trace” in the country. It was reported on Monday, October 2 AFP.
Ahead of the parliamentary election, Russia’s foreign intelligence chief called Slovakia’s Progressive party a “proxy of the US” and said that elections in Slovakia “can hardly be perceived as democratic and free from external influence.” According to Naryshkin, the United States has allegedly intensified its interference in the elections and calls to “discard the chimera of morality and use any means to achieve the desired result.”
“We consider such a deliberate spread of disinformation as unacceptable interference by the Russian Federation in the electoral process in the Slovak Republic,” the Slovak Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
They called on the Russian Federation to stop disinformation activities, as it damages their relations and also contradicts the principles of international relations.
Former Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico’s SMER-SSD party took first place in the parliamentary elections. According to official results, Fico’s pro-Russian party won 22.9% of the vote.
Let’s remember that a year ago a survey was conducted in Slovakia, which showed that the majority of Slovaks wanted Russia to win.
